Cycle to work schemes ''can help inspire climate change''

Environmentally-friendly projects like the government-backed cycle to work scheme can help inspire Britain to tackle climate change.

Yesterday (June 17th) saw the second annual Green Britain Day and sponsors EDF Energy said the event served as a reminder of the importance of the issue.

Chief operating officer Eva Eisenschimmel said: "People need to be inspired - we all need to feel that this topic is important."

She added that while many people were sceptical about climate change, the evidence was now "absolutely compelling" and by organising fun events within the community, change may occur.

Research by EDF Energy and Energy Futures Lab at Imperial College London found that only around a fifth of Britons regard climate change as a pressing issue.

Cycle to work schemes are just one way of cutting down on carbon emissions as the UK seeks to achieve EU targets for 2020, which aim to reduce CO2 levels to 20 per cent less than in 1990.
